PRE-DEPARTURE CHECK LIST FOR INCOMING EXCHANGE STUDENTS (See Guidebook Below)
Fill out the NMSU non-degree exchange application form (fillable pdf version) or international graduate application form (if approved to pursue graduate studies) and fax it to the Office at 575-646-3482 then mail it to Office of Study Abroad, MSC 3567, Box 30001, Las Cruces, NM 88003-8001. (Use Room 238 Garcia Annex if sending documents by express mail.) You are not officially admitted until we have received and processed the non-degree exchange application or the international graduate application.

Send the Office your current address, telephone number, and e-mail address if different from that listed on your application. The Peer Advisor for the Gobal Village Program will be your primary contact for information about studying and living at NMSU.

Check that you have a passport that is valid 6 months beyond the end of your exchange. Make an appointment with a U.S. Embassy to obtain the J-1 student visa. Students need to receive and take the DS-2019 form to a U.S. Embassy to obtain the visa. Students on bilateral exchange will receive the DS-2019 form from NMSU. Those coming with ISEP will receive the DS-2019 from ISEP to take to the Embassy.

Let the Office know when you will arrive at least two weeks in advance so we may pick you up at the airport ($35 fee). Schedule to fly to El Paso, Texas (not Albuquerque, NM), the international airport closest to Las Cruces. Make sure you arrive on time for the mandatory orientation as instructed by the Office. Also make sure to send us a photograph of yourself so we can identify you at the airport.

Pre-register for your classes on line according to the instructions you will receive after June 1. You will need the ID# provided by e-mail to you. Check that your university has approved any courses you need for your program at home. You cannot receive an NMSU Student ID number until you have submitted the appropriate NMSU non-degree exchange or degree application form and had it processed by International Admissions. Early on-line registration is encouraged to make sure you can obtain the classes you want.

Fill out the NMSU housing application according to the instructions sent by e-mail. The Office will pay the application fee for students receiving housing benefits as part of their exchange. Exchange students with NMSU housing benefits are placed in the Vista Del Monte Global Village in 2 bedroom apartments with kitchen facilities. Students whose exchange does not include housing benefits may choose to live whereever they want, but will receive the discounted exchange rate for living in VDM Global Village. Send the housing application to the Office of Study Abroad, not Housing Office, since we must coordinate placements with them. Note: On-campus housing in VDM will be guaranteed for those exchange students who have paid, such as to ISEP, the cost of housing. Since on-campus housing may be limited some semesters, the Office cannot guarantee on-campus housing placement.

Bring some U.S. dollars and a credit card with you so you can pay for incidentals until you are provided your stipend for the exchange (if this is provided). Exchange stipends will be available within the first two weeks of the semester.
