PRE-DEPARTURE CHECK LIST FOR INCOMING SCHOLARS See Pre-arrival and Post-arrival topics below
Check that you have a passport that is valid beyond the end date of your DS-2019. Make an appointment with a U.S. Embassy to obtain the J-1 scholar visa. Send the Responsible Officer by email a message confirming you have received your J-1 visa and the date you plan to arrive in the U.S. If your arrival date will be more than 30 days beyond the start date listed on your DS-2019, the RO will have to amend your program to show the later start date and to prevent the SEVIS system from making your status inactive
Schedule an appointment with the RO so that you may receive orientation within 3 days of arriving at NMSU. If the RO will be absent, you will be referred to the ARO for assistance. We must record your arrival in SEVIS within 30 days of the start date listed on the DS-2019. You may arrive 30 days before the listed start date.
Seek assistance from your sponsoring department for airport pickup (fly to El Paso, Texas, the closest international airport to Las Cruces-52 miles), housing off-campus, and terms of employment. JEVS is responsible for approving employment so you may apply for a social security card used for employment identification, but the department is responsible for coordinating your appointment with the Department of Human Resouces.
Bring some U.S. dollars and a credit card with you so you can pay for start up living costs and mandatory insurance which needs to be purchased when you arrive.
